Empower, Repair, Ride.
RAD Bikes (Recycle a Dunger) runs a not-for-profit community bike workshop in Ōtautahi/Christchurch.
RAD provides workshop space where everyone is welcome to help recycle and learn how to fix bikes for themselves or others.
Bikes, tools, parts and technical guidance are all provided onsite.
RAD also runs a range of mechanics courses along with community programmes and special bike-focused events.
“RAD’s vision is to empower people, repair resources & enable all to ride towards a better future”
(Rich - RAD Board)
“I attended RAD with a dump bicycle and was amazed. Not only did they recycle old parts but they had expertise in copious abundance. People shared stories and advice and I was blown away with the thoughtfulness of everyone. The whole system is one of nurturing, from the bike parts to the human contact.”
(Marylynne - RAD user)
“I can't adequately express how grateful I am to have had such willing and cheerful support. The freedom and independence that comes from having transport is invaluable, especially for newcomers to New Zealand. I have seen their state of mind improve markedly. It's given them access to social and cultural stimulation that was very difficult before. The work that you and RAD do is extremely important and it means a great deal to people, thank you very much.”
(Canterbury Refugee Centre - RAD recipient)
“The sense of community and purpose I've found at RAD has really been unlike any organisation I've been a part of. Our facilitator and mechanics really set an inclusive tone and exude contagious enthusiasm, making sure that all comers feel welcome, respected and empowered, and able to build and share their skills to their fullest capacity. Our volunteers pick up these values and share them generously. The result is an organisation that has really cracked the code to keep people coming back. Through all weather and all seasons, and no matter how fast we grow, you can watch the steady waves of bikes, smiles, and knowledge spreading outwards from our humble shed in the park to the rest of Otautahi and beyond. RAD bikes is a model organisation for cities wishing to take serious action on climate change.” (Kevin - RAD volunteer)
